TTY stands for Text Telephone. It allows those who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired to type messages back and forth on their text phones. There are printing and non-printing TTY phones - and one that works with cell phones. One can "talk" with others that don't have a TTY phone by using a free Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) which allows an operator to read aloud the text to the party on the other end.
